Agave, Day One

After being gone a month, I came home yesterday to my beautiful agave starting to flower! I’ve never had one live long enough to reach that accomplishment. Wonderful! The forming stalk is shocking, too, after years of the agave being a soft green, rosetta-shaped plant close to the ground. Suddenly, a red stalk!

When I read that agaves die after they produce their flower, I felt sad for much of the day. I’ve been tending the agave for about ten years and did not really feel ready to let it go.

Sigh.
